Democracy depends on educated populace

| August 25, 2010 9:00 PM

When someone makes an erroneous assumption and builds upon that mistake, logic demands that such thinking will produce more errors. So, it is important to start with a firm accurate foundation.

If someone believes that one plus one equals three, then it follows that one plus one plus one equals four and the error compounds.

For example, it’s easy to assume that homosexuality is a lifestyle “choice” or something that can be “cured” with appropriate treatment if you erroneously believe that homosexuals are made not born, nurture rather than nature.

So how will the country fare when less than ½ of Republicans believe that our President is both a Christian and a citizen? Such crackpot beliefs will affect their view of public policy and the way they vote. The sad thing in all this is that these beliefs are being driven and supported by some of our political leaders purely for political advantage. How is it possible that we can elect such misguided, irresponsible people?

Democracy depends on an educated and engaged electorate. God help us if people don’t become better informed.
