Vikings notch win over Bulldogs
SANDPOINT — Caelyn Orlandi and Whitney Wood each scored second half goals, and keeper Christine Woeller came up with a couple of big saves late in the game to lead Coeur d’Alene to a 2-1 win over Sandpoint in girls soccer action Saturday at Centennial Field.
“A great win over a great program,” said a happy Vikings head coach Tarragh Carr. “I asked the girls to make three adjustments at half to improve and they made all three of them.”
Meghan Pagano got Sandpoint (0-1-2) on the board with an equalizer in the 64th minute, finally finding the back of the net after narrowly missing a couple of great chances earlier.
Wood would score the game winner for the Vikings (3-0) off a high, looping direct kick from more than 30 yards out that slipped just inside the far post. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Woeller made arguably the biggest play of the game when she dove to get a hand on a pointblank breakaway shot by Pagano, deflecting the sure goal just over the crossbar.
“Despite the score, I was very impressed with the girls,” said first-year Sandpoint head coach Julie Pitre. “We had possession the majority of the game and they looked calm and confident.”
Sandpoint hosts Lake City on Monday.
