Legalization does not make abortion right

| December 7, 2010 6:00 AM

I just wanted to say “thank you” to Marty Stitsel for his letter on Tuesday, Nov. 30, in the Bee concerning the absurdity of outlawing abortion. It has totally changed my view. Now I see that, even though abortion is wrong, it’s going to happen anyway so we might as well just make it safe.

This is a wonderful philosophy. I think that we should carry it into other areas of society as well. Take murder for instance. Killing innocent people happens even though it’s illegal. Isn’t it sticking our head in the sand to outlaw something that’s going to happen anyway?

Shouldn’t we legalize murder and then just make sure it’s safe for everybody? Well, safe for everyone except the person getting killed, I guess.

Yes, let’s keep abortion legal; just make it safe for everyone. Oh, except for that baby that’s killed in the process.

(I trust my point is taken. You see, philosophies in one area will undoubtedly become a paradigm for philosophies in other areas. A belief like the one discussed above opens the door for moral relativism that will ultimately be the demise of society itself.)
