Lockey scores big pin in win
RATHDRUM — Sophomore Matt Lockey moved up a weight class to score a surprising win, one of eight Bulldog wrestlers to win by pin in a convincing 57-20 win over Timberlake in a season opener Thursday night at Timberlake High School.
Lockey asked Sandpoint head coach Mike Randles to move up in weight when Timberlake didn’t have a 215 pound wrestler, so the 212 pound Lockey faced 278 pound heavyweight Allan Foote. Despite the weight difference, Lockey held a 7-4 lead in the third period when his leg was lifted, falling backwards and rolling through for the surprise pin of the night.
“Matt Locki, giving up nearly 60 pounds, fought through exhaustion to post an impressive win,” said Randles. “Overall the kids wrestled well but we all saw some areas we need to focus on.”
Freshman Lily DeAragon (112) hammered a quick fireman’s carry to win by way of a first period pin in her first varsity match, and Jarad Fowler (103) overcame an early deficit to score a first period pin. Peyton Dillon (119), Garret Belgarde (130), Troy Goodman (135), Kyle Csizmar (140) and Justin Pepperdine (189) also registered pins in a match the Bulldogs led 48-4 at one point.
Sandpoint is at the prestigious Tri-State tournament at NIC next weekend.
