Help Habitat provide homes to deserving families

| December 16, 2010 6:00 AM

Dear Habitat friends,

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian non-profit organization that raises money and recruits volunteers to build houses for responsible low-income families. Each house is built with the assistance of the future homeowners.

Habitat is a joint venture, not a giveaway charity. Homeowner families commit to investing many hours of work (at least 300) into their own or other Habitat houses. This helps reduce costs, increase the pride of ownership and fosters a positive relationship with the community. They also make mortgage payments back to Habitat, which go directly into new building projects in our community.

We have nearly finished our 13th home. The home is located on the new 15-lot development, Schissler Meadows. The development was named after our founding member, Mike Schissler. Mike passed away nine years ago, but his memory will live on with this development.

Recently, we opened our new ReStore on Boyer Avenue. This store has been a huge success. The store sells donated building materials, appliances and home goods which funds the building of homes each year. The ReStore (265-5313) always needs material donations and volunteer help.

Our affiliate continues to build every year with no interruption of production. Our affiliate is not flashy but very steady. We seem, with your help, to supply homes for deserving families every year, year after year. Since 1992, we have come to be a model in our community for providing housing to deserving families.

Most of the work building the houses is done with volunteer labor; volunteers with many different interests, skills and backgrounds. You can make a difference by saying,”I can do this!” Volunteers build more than a house — they build a home for a family to own!

Few organizations present the opportunity to make such lasting and profound changes in people’s lives. Let’s double our production in the next 10 years backed by your gifts. We need help! Funds for building materials come from our supporters – individuals, churches and community businesses.

Your gift of $20, $30, $50, $100 or more will help accomplish miracles for Habitat families in the New Year. You can mail donations in to Idaho Panhandle Habitat for Humanity, Box 1191, Sandpoint, ID 83864. We also have the ability to receive donations by credit card via Pay Pal on our website, iphfh.org or just click on the donate tab in the blue ribbon at the top of the home page, then click on the donate button on the right side of the next page.

Happy Holidays.
