Wampus Cats fall on road to Spartans
PRIEST RIVER — Holly Hirst and Liz Halcro each scored 12 points to help lead the Spartans to a 59-22 non-league win over Clark Fork Wednesday.
Morgan Stewart added three triples and scored 11 points for 3A Priest River (2-6), which started the game on an 18-4 run and forced a running clock by the start of the fourth.
“We really haven’t had a cakewalk for a schedule so far this season and have taken our lumps, playing Freeman, Newport, Colville and Cheney, so this game was a real good confidence booster for us,” Spartan coach Gary Stewart said after the game. “I think we’ll be ready for league in January.”
Junior Brocklynn Thornton scored a team-high seven points for the 1A Wampus Cats (4-4), who got off to a slow start and struggled to find a flow to the game.
“It’s Christmas break,” expressed Clark Fork coach Dexter Vogel. “We came out slow and sluggish but the girls kept playing and I’m happy with that. We’ll come back and do better, work harder and we’ll get there. This is a good group of girls.”
Claire McMahon, Celeste Kromanec and Dimi Kailang each added four points for the Wampus Cats, who play Bonners Ferry (1-5) on Tuesday at Timberlake High School.
Priest River plays at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in a make-up home game against Rogers High School.
