Melvin Glenn Martin, 83, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint. Pastor Kenneth Buck will be officiating and interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Melvin was born in Walthill, Neb., on Aug. 26, 1927. He attended schools in Macy, Neb., prior to joining the U.S. Army and serving in Korea. In 1947 he hitchhiked from Nebraska to Sandpoint and started working as a logger.
On June 4, 1949, he married Peggy Shuster in Newport, Wash.
Melvin worked on both the Albeni Falls Dam and the Cabinet Gorge Dam and he worked construction in the Northwest. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Sandpoint Local. In 1967, he became a gypo logger locally, operating his own trucks and loaders. He retired in February 1987 for health reasons.
Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, gathering mushrooms, picking huckleberries, and having his “morning coffee” at the Pastime.
He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Peggy Martin, in Sandpoint; three sons, Allen (and Sandra) Martin in Colville, Wash., Dale (and Peggy) Martin in Hayden, Idaho, and Jack Martin, in Sandpoint; six grandchildren, Colleen, Debbie, Kayla, Stephanie, Bryon, and Keenan; and five great-grandsons and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Lyle (and Joan) Martin in Fremont, Neb.; and his sister, Cleta (and Doug) Bell in Ft Worth, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Duward, Kenton, and Leslie.
