Youth handball tournament a hit
SANDPOINT — Eric Nikssarian and Dean Sutton each won their bracket during the Sandpoint Youth Classic handball tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Sandpoint West Athletic Club.
Nikssarian beat Anthony Gold to win the A bracket championship, rebounding from an 11-8 first game loss to win the next two 11-5, 11-7. Luther Morgan finished third in the A bracket.
In the B bracket final, Dean Sutton beat Brian Remsen in three games, falling 11-1 before bouncing back to win the next two games 11-10, 11-7. Eric Murray finished third in the B bracket.
All told, 18 Sandpoint High School kids competed in the one-day tournament. Don Helander allowed the kids free use of the SWAC throughout a two-month handball class, then donated all of the handballs and bought the group pizza for the tournament, which also featured referees.
Jake Plummer, Glenn Sutton and Nate Knaggs helped coach the class, which provided a host of kids a chance to try a new sport.
