Closing school would be a huge mistake

| February 10, 2010 8:00 PM

People in the Northside School District are very concerned about a recent proposal made to the school board by the superintendent that involves closing Northside School as a way to deal with a projected shortfall of funds coming from the state.

Northside has such a wonderful history of providing not only education, buy nurturing and character building. It would be such a shame to take away a historic community center such as Northside has become over the last 50 years, evidenced by the attendance at our yearly harvest dinner of families of three generations sitting down together for dinner.

When a small community is forced to be absorbed into a larger group, so much is lost. There will be a workshop at the school to discuss the issue on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. We can only hope that the school board which has managed to already make some tough fiscal decisions, resulting in a $1.5 million reserve, will also vote with their heart.
