Four Wampus Cats named to All-NSL team
CLARK FORK — The Clark Fork girls basketball team ran roughshod over its North Star League foes, posting an undefeated record in league play, so it came as no surprise Wednesday when the Wampus Cats landed four players on the all-league team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.
Leading the way was senior point guard Shaina Gustafson, who was the unanimous pick for league Most Valuable Player. Quick and tenacious, she played a large role in the Cats getting to the state tournament.
“Just a great ball player this year,” said Cats coach Dexter Vogel of Gustafson, who hopes to play in college. “In fact, she’s been a great player all four years.”
Joining Gustafson on the team is fellow senior and tennis doubles partner Chelsea Macumber. A great athlete and defender, Macumber also provided some leadership on a mostly young Cats team.
“She’s got lots of speed,” said Vogel of Macumber. “She produced a lot of steals with her great defense.”
Two sophomores also made the team, a sign of good things to come for the Cats, who won once and lost twice in their three games at state, experience that Vogel believes will serve his team well in the future. Celeste Komanec was stellar at point guard when Gustafson was hurt, and center Brocklynn Thornton had two of her biggest games down the stretch.
“Celeste had the best state tournament of all the girls. She came a long ways in the last little bit of the season,” said Vogel, whose team advanced to the consolation final at state. “Brocklynn had some big rebounds and points. Next year she’ll help us out a lot inside.”
