Buratto breaks Sandpoint scoring record

| January 7, 2010 8:00 PM

Sandpoint senior Stefan Buratto broke the SHS single game scoring mark when he exploded for 42 points in a 94-75 overtime loss to Post Falls on Wednesday night.

Buratto broke the previous record of 40 points, set by Bulldog hoops legend Gary Elliot in 1965. Jay VanDenBerg and Dave DeMers each had 39 point scoring games, but nobody had hit 40 since Elliot dropped in 40 to go with 23 rebounds against Bonners Ferry.

Blaine Shultz added 17 points, Skyler Tucker seven, Brandon Lawrence five and Mike Hubbard four to round out the scoring.

“I’m really proud of them, they just ran out of gas in OT,” said head coach Tyler Haynes, marveling at the play of Buratto, who made 13 field goals and was 12-12 from the free throw line. “I think he’s the best player in the league, I really do.”

Tonight is pivotal in 4A North play, with the girls team hosting rival Moscow at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30. Bob Witte will call both games live on AM 1400.
