Forfeits costly as Bulldog wrestlers fall to Spartans

| January 26, 2010 8:00 PM

PRIEST RIVER — Sandpoint won five of eight matches wrestled and out-pinned the Spartans 3-2 but five Bulldog forfeits ultimately decided Monday nights’ dual with Priest River.

“I thought we wrestled well and even won the majority of the matches,” Sandpoint coach Mike Randles said. “If you look at the small picture the forfeits killed us, but if you look at the big picture guys got a chance to get tougher and get better.”

The Bulldogs won the first three matches after a 103 pound forfeit by Priest River.  Payton Dillon (112) won 9-4 while Garret Belgarde (119) and Kyle Csizmar (125) each picked up pins.

Priest River junior James Hegge (130) got the host Spartans on the board with a 1:40 pin over Dakota Blaese.  Thomas Kissinger (135) and Chris Pooley (140) won after Bulldog forfeits while Cody Rabidue (152) brought the Spartans within three points, 27-24, with an impressive pin in 2:29.

Sandpoints’ David Marienau (145) picked up six points after a 5:31 pin and Leonard Fister (160) extended the Bulldog lead to 30-24.  Tanner Rogers won the 171 pound match 5-0 for Priest River before Sandpoint forfeits at 189, 215 and 285 pounds brought the final score to 45-30 in the Spartans favor.

“It’s good to get a win against Sandpoint and I thought the guys rallied to do so,” said Spartan coach Brandon Keinert. “We have no problem winning off forfeits and think it’s a credit to the guys that have stuck it out and filled those weights.”
