Randles, Stebbins notch impressive wrestling wins
SANDPOINT — Top Dog Casey Randles earned All-American honors by knocking off both the Oregon state champion and national Greco Roman champion from California on his way to a third place finish at the USA Wrestling Kids Nationals recently at the McKay Center in Orem, Utah.
Randles, who had to sit out the Western U.S. Championships earlier in the month due to an injury, scored a two-period victory over his opponent from Oregon to earn second place within his bracket. He was later upended by the eventual national runner up from Kansas.
In the third place, cross-bracketing match, Randles scored a first period technical fall over Andrew Cervantes from California. Cervantes tied up the match by securing the technical fall in the second period. In the decisive third period, the two traded scores with Randles re-throwing Cervantes in the waning seconds of the match for the win.
Randles joins fellow Top Dog and Washington sixth grader Owen Stebbins with national level honors. Stebbins earned a fourth place finish earlier in the spring at the World of Wrestling Championships held in Reno Nevada. In earning a fourth place finish, Stebbins pinned the defending national freestyle and Greco Roman champion Jared Torres of California.
