| July 12, 2010 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — The red-hot Peak Sand and Gravel Lakers swept a doubleheader from Silver Valley on Sunday at War Memorial Field, earning the streaking team the top seed in the district tournament later this month.

Tyler Gordon struck out seven in six strong innings to pick up a 14-4 win in the opener, running his record on the season to a perfect 5-0. Cole Tonnemacher ripped a double and drove in two runs, and Jordan Hammack hit a walk-off two-run double to end the game in the sixth via the 10 run rule.

Joel Cramer tossed a one-hit gem in the nightcap, as the Lakers (27-6) pushed their winning streak to a whopping 15 games with a decisive 14-0 win, keyed by an eight run first inning. Every Laker scored at least one run, Tonnemacher hit a two-run triple, Hammack added a two run double and Corey Neer also drove in two runs in the blowout win.

The Lakers will look to extend their streak during tough road trips this week, with doubleheaders against Moscow today and Coeur d’Alene on Thursday, before returning home for a doubleheader against St. Maries on Saturday.

n Lakers split doubleheader against Alumni team

SANDPOINT — After getting beaten handily last year, the current Lakers squad showed they’re much improved, splitting games against a team of former Lakers in the Alumni game on Saturday night at War Memorial Field.

In the opener, the Alumni won 5-3 on the strength of solo home runs by Steve Wold, Justin Watson and Adam Hodges. Scott Snow provided all of his team’s runs with a three-run homer of his own, but two untimely errors proved the difference. Current Lakers Ryan Schwartz, Zac Farrell and Tonnemacher turned two sterling double plays in the loss.

The long-awaited rematch was so much fun, the alumni decided to do Cub great Ernie Banks proud by playing two.

In the second game the lead swung back and forth several times until the fifth inning when the Lakers put up five runs on hits by Tonnemacher, Cramer and Gordon, propelling the younger squad to an 8-7 win. Tevin Hamilton came in to close the game, earning the save while striking out four in two solid innings of work.

This great match-up is becoming a favorite in town and will surely be replayed next year.
