Philip Durbin, 91
Philip Durbin passed away surrounded by family on July 2, 2010, in Kootenai, Idaho, at the age of 91.
A service for family and friends will be held at a private residence in Sandpoint on July 19, 2010, at 4 p.m. with a remembrance gathering immediately following.
Philip was born on Oct. 4, 1918, in Tulsa, Okla., to Joseph Durbin and Mary Evans. In his early years he joined the CCC’s working in Nevada, California and Arizona. Philip joined the U.S. Navy in 1937. He served in World War II and Korea on several different destroyers and destroyer tenders. He retired in 1957 as chief torpedoman, (TMC). After the war, Philip returned to civilian life, living in California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Philip married Goldie Brewen in 1942. Goldie passed away in 2001. In November 2008, Philip moved from the Oregon Veterans Home to Hearth-stone Village in Kootenai to be near family.
He is survived by his daughter, Betty Jean Walker of Sandpoint; grandsons, Douglas Saldivar of Welches, Ore., Rick Hamilton of Portland, Ore., Mark Hamilton of Portland, Hans Feyen of Sandpoint and Kurt Feyen of Sandpoint; granddaughter, Nila Hamilton, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and his niece, Susan Crocker.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Durbin; parents, Joseph Durbin and Mary Evans; and five brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a donation be made in the name of Philip Durbin to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 North Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203.
