'Grandma' Iris Fern Hines, 87
“Grandma” Iris Fern Hines, 87, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010 in Sandpoint, Idaho, where she lived for 24 years.
At her request, there will not be a funeral service.
She was born on Sept. 17, 1922, in Red Deer, Alberta, in Canada, one of 12 children born to Ora E. and Edna Pearl Veach. Iris crossed the Canadian border at age 2, however, she didn’t gain her citizenship until the early 1960s after realizing she was not a U.S. citizen.
Iris married Arthur Earl Hines on Christ-mas Eve, 1941 in Sacra-mento, Calif., She was a homemaker and mother to five children. Iris attended Sacramento City College to become a licensed vocational nurse. She worked at Sutter General Hospital for 17 years before retiring. She then moved to Sandpoint in 1986 where she helped plan, build and live in her barn-style home.
Iris loved to read, garden, quilt, and enjoy a coup of hot tea while overlooking “the meadow.”
She is survived by her children: Arthur, Juanita, David and John as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; 11 siblings, John, Harry, Robert, George, Mary, Elaine, Inez, Irene, Charles, Jean, and Jerry; and a daughter, Diana.
We would like to thank her dedicated caregivers Evergreen Assisted Living and Valley Vista Care Center for making her last years full and comfortable.
