Most soldiers proud to serve under president

| June 2, 2010 9:00 PM

I don’t know where Mr. Brixen got the idea that President Obama “had proposed that veterans obtain private insurance to cover injuries received in service to their country.” This may have been something he heard from Rush Limbaugh.

As a veteran who risked my life for my country, I am aware that most veterans are covered for injuries they receive in service. Although I was discharged in 1958, I was still eligible recently for government-paid medical care at the Spokane VA hospital.

Whether he is a veteran or not, Mr. Brixen should be aware that most veterans are covered for such injuries. (I knew one vet who suffered injuries working in a shipyard in World War II who received disability his entire life.)  I’m sure our president is well aware of current veterans’ benefits, and he campaigned to improve treatment of returning veterans that was neglected under the previous administration.

In addition, our local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans provides free transportation to the VA Medical Center driven by veteran volunteers like Bob Wynhausen. A new van was recently provided by generous donations from Panhandle Bank, the Community Assistance League and others.

I believe most current servicemen and women, and veterans, are proud to serve under our current commander-in chief.
