Sandpoint woman wins Cd'A Marathon
COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint’s Jody Aslett, 41, topped the women’s field on Sunday during the 33rd Annual Coeur d’Alene Marathon.
She said she’s run the race before, but felt more prepared this time, finishing in 3:06:32 and more than 10 minutes ahead of the next closest runner.
“I have a little more training under my belt this year,” Aslett said. “It’s really exciting. I’ve never placed so well at a big race.”
She is using the race as part of her training for some upcoming 100-mile ultramarathons in Wyoming and Montana.
She said the win gives her back some confidence.
“I thought I’d lost all my speed, and thought I was over my peak,” Aslett said. “I’m finding some speed I didn’t know I had, so I’m pretty excited about that.”
Other local finishers included Clark Fork’s Samuel Overman, who clocked a respectable 3:08.44 to finish ninth among more than 200 men, and second in his age group of 35-39. Sandpoint’s Dennis Aslett finished 64th among the men with a time of 3:46.17, good for third place in the 60-64 year-old bracket.
Hamburg, Germany native and current Moscow resident Kjell Schioberg, 32, hammered home his first-ever marathon win on the men’s side, clocking a time of 2 hours, 44 minutes, 47 seconds over the 26.2-mile course that primarily follows the Centennial Trail, provides views of the Spokane River and Lake Coeur d’Alene and starts and ends at Riverstone.
Nearly 500 runners registered for the marathon.
