PAFE awards $167,000 to LPOSD teachers

| June 21, 2010 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Harness the power of the wind? Grow an edible garden? Embark on an exciting tour of college and career possibilities?

Sound impossible?  It’s not! All of these opportunities and 62 more are available to students in the Lake Pend Oreille School District thanks to a new round of grants made possible by the Panhandle Alliance for Education.

“We have an impressive array of 65 innovative projects that will be incorporated into our public school curriculum next fall,” Vickie Pfeifer, PAFE’s Grant Committee chairwoman said. “These grants represent an investment of over $167,000 into classrooms for the 2010-’11 school year.”

The awards are the result of a competitive grants process where all teachers in the Lake Pend Oreille School District are invited to participate, Pfeifer said. More than 100 applications were received and reviewed by the PAFE Grants Committee.

“It’s not an easy process of elimination when all of the grants submitted are wonderful ideas that merit approval.”  Pfeifer added.

The PAFE Teacher Grants program has been in existence since 2003. But 2010 was unique in both the number of requests received, and the dollars available for funding.

The PAFE program received a $28,727 boost — thanks to a generous gift from the Fenton Family Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation, in memory of Joyce Fenton, Pfeifer said.

In light of the economic environment and resent school budget cuts, Fenton’s daughters Julie Meyer and Susie Kubiak decided to direct the final amount from this fund to PAFE for full or partial funding of the following 12 grants for the 2010/11 academic calendar;

Those grants went Kim Queen for the districtwide Ovations program; Imogene Lyon, Sandpoint Middle School for “Great Reads;” Mary Bird, Sandpoint High School, AcaDeca curriculum; Julie Williams, Sandpoint Charter School, science lab materials; Julie Smith, districtwide, Accelerated Reading program; Nancy Williams, Kootenai Elementary, Science Lit. Jump Start;

Julie Reister-Keaton, Kootenai Elementary, library books; Teresa Kemink, Kootenai Elementary, community garden; Tom Pres,  Clark Fork High School, “Wheels of Wisdom” program; Amy O’Hara, Sandpoint Charter School, artist in residence; Aaron Gordon, SHS, double bass project; and Jeanie Hunter, SHS, silent films.

“This is a remarkable gift and speaks volumes about the family’s confidence in the teachers in the Lake Pend Oreille School District,” said PAFE’s president Wendy Dunn of the Fenton family donation, “ These grants will touch thousands of students and leave a lasting impact on their love for learning.”

The Glass Slipper Award for Excellence in Education, which was established last year to recognize an exceptional grant, was awarded to Sandpoint Middle School science teacher, Perky Smith-Hagadone for her alternative energy grant.  Students build working solar cars and measure the level of electricity generated under windmill power.

Annual distributions from PAFE’s Special Funds held by the Idaho Community Foundation are awarded to teachers at this time through the annual teacher grants process. Several of the 65 grants announced today fall into this special funds category, said PAFE director Marcia Wilson.

The Betty Ann Diehl Fund for Music and Arts Education in the Idaho Community Foundation was awarded to teacher Greg Schuh for his districtwide grant for supplemental saxophones in support of the sixth grade band program.

  The Dave and Laurie Wall Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation will be divided to fund four grants in math and science, including: a districtwide grant from LPOSD curriculum development director Marshall Mayer for the Water Festival Science Grant, Sandpoint Middle School teacher Imogene Lyon for The Brain Unit, Sandpoint Middle School math teacher Patrick Lynch for the Geometry of Wind Chimes Grant and Sagle Elementary School teacher Liz Gollen for her grant titled The Weather Station.

The 65 grants announced this week bring the total number of teacher implemented grants in the Lake Pend Oreille School District to 340 since PAFE’s inception in 2003, Wilson said.

“The total dollars invested in teachers and classrooms made possible by the community are more than $916,000,” she added. “The results are priceless!”
