Green Monarchs host men's soccer tournament

| June 25, 2010 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — It may not be peak season, but soccer is very much in the air around Sandpoint, and not just for the World Cup or the ever-popular Brian Farber Pro Soccer Camp.

The Green Monarch Football Club of Sandpoint is hosting the 2nd Annual North Idaho Cup Men’s Soccer Tournament this weekend in Sandpoint. The tournament will consist of six teams from Montana, Idaho and Washington.

All games will be played at Pine Street Athletic Field, starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and finishing with the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Green Monarch Football Club unofficially began sometime in the late 90’s. Competitive soccer players from the Northern Idaho area formed a team to travel to summer tournaments in Canada, Montana and Eastern Washington. The team was and still is comprised of standout players from throughout the entire Inland Northwest area, and won the event last year.

Today, the Green Monarch Football Club competes in the Inland Northwest Soccer Associations Men’s Open League in Spokane during the summer months and continues to participate in summer tournaments throughout the region.

Owing to the wealth of talent in area, Sandpoint will have two teams playing. The Big Dawgs, made up of mostly Sandpoint High School alumni, will start the tournament on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Monarchs at 11 a.m.

The Green Monarchs would like to thank Ivano’s Ristorante, Eichardts Pub, Sandpoint Title Insurance, Brian Farber Pro Soccer Camps and Doug Dirks Tree Care for making this year’s tournament possible.
