Take time to separate fact from fiction

| June 30, 2010 9:00 PM

Once again we are being bombarded from the right with falsehoods, mistaken quotes and misinformation about our President and his actions.

Mr. Johnson is concerned that stockholders of BP, which has caused the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, may suffer by the President negotiating a $20 billion claims fund to help businesses and individuals in the Gulf hurt by the spill. He questions our President’s right to do this even though he was elected by the people, not by Congress, and the President has the authority under executive order to protect our citizens.

As for helping our auto industry and its thousands of workers, along with some banks, survive a crippling recession, which Terry Lamb decries in a letter, Obama did this with approval of Congress, and much of this “bailout” money has been repaid. And Lamb claims that the President has raised taxes, when in fact most Americans paid lower income taxes in 2009  than in recent years.  As for Obama “demonizing the future of business” with the health care bill passed by Congress, the fact is the new bill will lower the deficit and provide relief from spiraling medical costs..

In another letter, Mr. Smith claims that the new health care bill passed by Congress authorizes taxpayer funding for abortion, which is another untruth spread by conservatives. With false information abounding, lets take time to separate fact from fiction.
