Bullpup 8th grade hoops teams go undefeated at tournament
SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint Middle School 8th grade basketball teams completed their season by dominating their respective divisions at the 74th Annual Bonners Ferry Basketball Tournament last weekend. This is the first time that a school has ever won all four divisions.
The 8th grade “B” girls went 3-0 to claim the championship over Kellogg and had a fantastic season under the direction of head coach Evelyn Raebel. The 8th grade “B” boys also went 3-0 to claim the championship over Lakeland. The team was coached by Rod Swerin and really had a great year, improving in every area.
The 8th grade boys “A” team won a very hard-fought game against a solid St. Maries team to claim the championship in the elite boys division, also going 3-0. This group has a lot of talent and size and was coached by Troy Holt.
In the 8th grade girls elite division the “A” girls team came in seeded No. 1 and did not disappoint. They beat Lakeland and Bonners Ferry to claim the championship trophy. The girls were coached by David DeMers, who is very excited about the future of Sandpoint basketball and believes this is only the beginning of all these kids bringing championships to Sandpoint in basketball.
“I am so proud of these kids and coaches for their commitment and desire to improve and represent their community with class,” said DeMers. “They are a special group of people.”
