Duo lead Bulldog golfers in opener

| March 8, 2010 8:00 PM

CLARKSTON, Wash. — Jessie Webster-Merwin shot a 90, good for 12th place among 85 golfers, to lead the Sandpoint girls golf team at the season-opening Clarkston Invite Monday at Quail Ridge Golf Course.

Mike Lewis carded an 88 to lead the boys team, the lone Bulldog to crack the century mark as players teed it up on an actual course for the first time this year. Head coach Jim Alsager called it a decent first outing and something to build on.

“A lot of cobwebs shook loose, a lot of rust,” he described of the day’s action. “It gives us a baseline to work with, now we have an attack plan to get better. It was pretty much what we expected.”

Lewis and Clark’s Justin Haase hit a hole-in-one on the way to a one-over 73, earning medalist honors in the boys meet at the Clarkston Country Club. Lewis and Clark won the boys tournament with a team score of 311, while Lewiston and Moscow each shot 339 to tie in the girls tournament.

Sandpoint plays at the Lewiston Invite next Monday.
