Man recovering after collapse at forum
VAY — It wasn’t politics as usual at the candidate forum at the Edgemere Grange on Sunday. After the speeches were done, Oldtown resident Richard Hamacher needed medical attention and that’s when the real commotion began.
“I couldn’t stand up and I didn’t feel right. Everyone started helping me and after an aspirin under my tongue I felt a little better but the left side of my face was numb,” Hamacher said. “I have never been around a better bunch of people than the ones that helped me. I can’t thank them enough for what they all did.”
Candidates Russ Schenck and Dennis Engelhardt called for an ambulance and began assessing the situation, Lois Hamacher said.
Lois Hamacher said her husband was transported to Newport Community Hospital, where he was initially treated for having a stroke. Richard Hamacher was later diagnosed with high cholesterol and doctors determined a piece of plaque caused a temporary stroke. With correct medication, he is expected to make a complete recovery.
The couple said the response to the crisis was overwhelming with many people volunteering to get Lois Hamacher and their truck home. They thanked all candidates as well as forum moderator Jay Cornwell for their care and concern.
“So many people have called to check on Dick and see how he was doing since Sunday. It has been wonderful. That so many of them didn’t give it a second thought at the Grange to help us out just can’t be thanked enough,” Lois said.
Richard Hamacher was released from the hospital on Tuesday and, although he is suppose to be resting, he was back to his jovial self, encouraging county residents to attend upcoming forums and have their voices heard before the election.
