Kirby, Meulenberg remain undefeated
SANDPOINT — Kevin Bucalo, Nicolette Jessen and Brittany Claffey each picked up their first varsity wins of the season, and Sandpoint never dropped a set in beating Lakeland 12-0 in 4A North tennis action Thursday at Travers Park.
Kevin Kirby remained undefeated on the season, downing Godwin Peck 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 boys singles, and Sophia Meulenberg also maintained her perfect record, dropping just one game while giving Yulia Semenova her first loss of the season at No. 1 girls singles. Sandpoint head coach Kent Anderson called both solid wins and said consistency was the key in both.
“Kevin had to play at the top of his game to beat a strong opponent,” said Anderson. “Sophia dominated a big Russian exchange student who just crushes the ball. She remains the most consistent hitter on the team and is now adding a power component to her game.”
Anderson also praised the play of Jessen, who teamed with Matt Durfee in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 mixed doubles.
“We work hard at attacking the net in practice,” he said. “That is exactly what they did to dismantle their opponents.”
Sandpoint scrimmages with Clark Fork today at 3 p.m. at Travers Park.
