Lloyd Eugene Dunkel, 88, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Wednesday, May 5, 2010.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8, in the Pack River Cemetery, with military honors.
Lloyd was born in Hopkinton, Iowa, on Sept 30, 1921; he grew up in that area, and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, the CCCs.
He also worked on area farms to help support his family.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea, retiring after 20 years of service.
Following his retirement from the Navy he earned his masters degree at Chico State College in Chico, Calif.
He worked as a seasonal ranger in New Mexico and California and as a curator for the State Park System in California.
He has lived, and worked, in San Diego and Chula Vista, Calif.; Bethesda, Md.; Trindad, Colo.; and Chico, Calif.; before moving to Sand-point in 1975.
On July 26, 1947, Lloyd married Wilma R. Kinman in Oakland, Calif.; they had been married for 60 years.
Lloyd was a gentleman farmer for many years, raising livestock, and always enjoyed the produce from his gardens.
Lloyd is survived by two sons, Mark (and Arlana) Dunkel and Roger Dunkel, both of Sandpoint, Idaho; and nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; as well as three brothers, Harlan, Edward, and Lyle; and two sisters, Lucille and Dorothy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; two brothers, Duane and Ernest; and a sister, Levona.
