Webster-Merwin leads Bulldog golfers in Cd'A

COEUR d’ALENE — Jessie Webster-Merwin shot an 88, good enough for seventh place overall out of 40 girls, to lead Sandpoint Thursday at the Lake City Invitational at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.

Margaret Nieman shot a career-low 127 in her final round of the season, and Charissa Chatburn shot a 105 to lead the short-handed girls team.

“Charissa is just waiting to break 100 and playing good enough to do it,” said head coach Jim Alsager, whose team was without Ashlie McIntire and Kristi Mire.

Webster-Merwin, McIntire, Chatburn, Mire and Beth Lewis will be the give golfers competing at districts, where it will take a top three individual finish for a Sandpoint golfer to make state, as the Moscow girls look to have a lock on the team berth.

“Jessie and Ashlie each have a shot at that third spot,” said Alsager.

Connor Currie continues to lead the boys team, carding an 89 as the Bulldogs placed eighth out of nine teams. The Bulldogs will send Currie, Mike Lewis, Chris Lewis, Michael Lorden and Kanyen Bauer to districts next week, where the boys team will need career rounds to make a run at Moscow for the team title.

“We can make a run at Moscow,” said Alsager. “Connor and Mike also have a shot to get to state, but they’ll need to shoot in the low- 80’s.”

Jayce Yoshida of Post Falls fired a 3-under-par 69 to claim boys medalist honors at the Lake City Invitational at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course. Coeur d’Alene’s boys, led by Brennan Stillinger’s 73, shot a 307 to win by eight strokes over Lewiston.

Katie Greear of Moscow was girls medalist with a 75, leading the Bears to a four-shot victory over Lewiston.

Sandpoint is at the 4A Region 1 meet on Tuesday, at Twin Lakes Golf Course at 11:30 a.m.
