Johnson nabs two seconds at state track meet

| May 20, 2010 9:00 PM

BOISE — Senior Christina Johnson set a personal best 36-3 in the shot put, finishing just four inches off the lead for one of her two second place finishes during the first day of the 2010 Idaho State Track and Field Championships at Boise State University.

Johnson, improved upon her third place finish last year in the discus, throwing 111-9 to finish in second place, just four feet off the lead. She nearly won the shot put, leading until the final round, when Moscow’s Margaret Behre narrowly edged her for the state title.

Susan Kovalchuk cleared 8-6 to place eighth in the pole vault and the sprint medley relay team finished eighth to help the Sandpoint girls to a seventh place finish among 20 after a day of mostly distance races and field events.

Mike Hubbard  high jumped 5-10 to finish sixth place in the high jump, and Danny Pfeifer broke 10 minutes to place seventh in the 3,200 to lead the Bulldog boys team. Pfeifer ran a solid race, finishing just one second off his personal best.

“He was in a group of eight kids all within 10 seconds of each other,” said distance coach Matt Brass. “He lost the pack and then reeled in four kids in the last 600 meters. It was fun to watch, he ran a great race.”

Elli Kiselica finished 13th and Maddie Suppiger 15th in the high jump, and Shane Kidd placed 13th in the shot put and Dillon Gingerich finished 13th in the triple jump to round out the Bulldog finishers.

The meet concludes today with the bulk of the running events and the rest of the field events.
