Bulldog girls relay team grabs second at state

BOISE — The Sandpoint girls 4x100 team of Melinda Van Dyk, Elli Kiselica, Makaila Bristow and Blake Plaster teamed up to finish second to lead Sandpoint during the second day of the 2010 Idaho State Track and Field Championships Friday at Boise State.

The team finished just one second behind first place Mountain Home, and helped the Bulldog girls team to an eighth place finish with 36.5 points in a meet won by Bishop Kelly.

Melinda Van Dyk capped a strong day with a fifth place finish in the 100 hurdles and a seventh place finish in the 100 meters. Jennie Meulenberg finished sixth in the long jump, to round out the Bulldogs who scored on the day.

The Sandpoint boys team did not score on the day, and finished in 21st place with 4.5 points.

Priest River’s Chad Yount heaved the shot 48-11 to claim the 3A state championship, part of a strong showing by the Spartan track team on the first day of the 3A championships, which continue today.

Taylor Stewart finished second in the shot (36-1) and fifth in the discus (110-1), and Melissa Hopkins went 34-2 to claim fourth in the triple jump, as the Spartan girls were in third place among 22 teams after day one.

Bonners Ferry’s Erin Hiatt cleared 10-0 to finish third in the pole vault, while teammate David Martin cleared 11-6 to finish 7th, rounding out the top local placers.

Clark Fork’s Chaunce Nesbitt (300 and 110 hurdles) and Zara Palmer (400) are both in action today in Boise. Mackenzie Quiroz did not clear the opening 4-8 height at state, and did not place in the high jump, the third and final Wampus Cat at state.
