Local students helped celebrate veterans
Veteran’s Day has passed but not unnoticed here in Sandpoint. It started for me on Monday at a Veteran’s Day program at Northside Elementary, where veterans were fed lunch and then treated to a program put on by the students and faculty. I felt an air of respect from the students throughout the program. I was at Northside because I was invited by my two grandsons, Tyler and Garrett Connolly.
On Tuesday, I attended a Veteran’s Day assembly at Sandpoint Senior High School. Here again, I felt that the students knew why the veterans were there and what they stood for and we appreciated their respect. The veterans were escorted into the gym by lovely young ladies and were greeted by applause from the student body. Following the very nice program, the students were given a period of 10 minuets to come down on the floor and talk to the veterans. It was gratifying the number of young ladies and men who came up to me and thanked me for my service to the country. Some had questions about the service, talked about their relatives who had or are now serving, but their gratitude was sincere.
I know that all schools had similar programs and for that I would like to thank the school district for allowing the students the opportunity to express their thanks to all veterans regardless of where they served. And if you don’t think there are a lot of good kids in this area you need to go to one of these functions.
