Property owners bear burden in district levies

| November 30, 2010 6:00 AM

A levy to once again cover a Lake Pend Oreille School District budget shortfall should be based on income rather than property values. At a time when people are losing their homes through mortgage foreclosures, an increase in taxes should not be put on the backs of property owners, many of whom senior citizens on fixed incomes.

It is natural for renters, particularly those with school age children, to vote in favor of a property tax increase. It is no skin off their teeth. It takes a long time for property tax increases to be reflected in rent increases. Let us have everyone share the pain, not just the property owners.
