Gibson's goals propel Bulldogs past Vikings
COEUR d’ALENE — Recently crowned Homecoming King Jasper Gibson took care of the offense, scoring the game’s only two goals, and Shane Stanley and Ryan Schwartz took care of the defense, shutting down Coeur d’Alene scoring machine Adam Borsheim and leading the Bulldogs to a 2-0 blanking of the Vikings in nonleague boys soccer action Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene High School.
Gibson now has four goals on the season, going far post on a ripper from about 22 yards out for the first goal in the 25th minute, then finishing a nice run from Tanner Williams, who slid the ball between a defender’s legs before slipping a pass to the charging Gibson for the insurance goal.
The Bulldogs (10-5-1) continue to find offense from other sources, as the high-scoring Williams continues to pile up assists of late as defenses key on him. Sandpoint head coach Adam Tajan had high praise for the play of his back third.
“We played great team defense. Shane Stanley and Ryan Schwartz did an excellent job and had each other’s back,” said Tajan. “It was a really good game for us, and we’re building momentum for state.”
Kanyen Bauer made three saves to pick up his fifth shutout in goal, as the back four was considerably sharper than in a 5-3 loss to the Vikings (9-3-2) earlier in the season.
Sandpoint will host the winner of Monday’s Lakeland vs. Moscow game on Wednesday, with a state berth on the line.
