| October 12, 2010 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — This past weekend, both the U11 and U14 Avalanche girls soccer teams picked up league victories, extending some impressive winning streaks. The U11s have now won three league games in a row, and the U14s have now won five league games in a row, and are undefeated in their past 12 games.

The U14 team defeated both the Sandpoint Strikers and the Coeur d’Alene Sting by the score of 6-0. The team played hard in both games, and was firing on all cylinders. The girls has been improving tactically with their offensive and defensive play, and have been improving on their crosses and heading, leading to impressive goals.

The U11s defeated the Idaho Thunder 3-1. Goalkeeper Lily Hartman posted a shutout in the first half, before sustaining an injury in the second half. Katherine Kaul played strong in the back and then split the second half in goal with Maddie Smith. Maddie played well as a forward keeping the field spread out and making nice passes. Casey Shaha had a goal and an assist, with Claire Shaha scoring the second goal. Helen Merwin scored the team’s final goal late in the second half.

Rachel Meyer had some fancy foot work that left her defender scratching her head, and Hadley Marshall was moved from postion to position, giving her team 100 percent and helping them wherever she was needed. Amelia Strauss helped the team on both the defensive and offensive ends, putting a lot of pressure on the opponenet. Forward Erin Meek had a lot of great shots on goal, but the keeper had her force field on. Collen Kindred had a great game and made some great passes to set up shots for her team.

With three straight league wins under their belt, the girls are having fun and gaining confidence.
