T-Wolves top Bulldogs

COEUR d’ALENE — For a half, it appeared as though the Sandpoint Bulldogs were going to sneak up and bite the Lake City Timberwolves in their non-league finale on Friday.

In the second half, the Timberwolves got it going on the ground through the heels of senior running back Allen Carmichael, who finished with a game-high 220 yards and four touchdowns in a 26-7 win.

“In the first half, we played right with them step for step,” Sandpoint coach Mike Mitchell said. “I knew at halftime we’d have to come out and make a stop on defense to keep in it. They’re really good up front.”

Sandpoint quarterback Brandon Hawkins had 99 all-purpose yards in the first half, with the Bulldogs getting on the board in the second quarter on a 63-yard run by Eric Nikssarian to take a 7-6 lead with 4:50 remaining.

“Brandon’s getting better each week,” Mitchell said. “He was really efficient tonight in the early going.”

Hawkins finished the night 10 of 22 passing for 80 yards, with five of the completions to Anthony Sekona, while Nikssarian had 96 yards on 13 carries for Sandpoint, which played without Anthony Gold for a second straight week.

“We don’t know if we’ll have him again next week either,” Mitchell said of Gold. “We feel good going into next week’s game. We’re getting healthier.”

Sandpoint (3-5) faces Moscow in a 4A Inland Empire League game at Barlow Stadium, in which the winner will be the league’s lone representative in the state playoffs.
