SANDPOINT - An accused child molester who was apprehended southeastern Michigan has been returned to Idaho to face the charges.

Ted Norman Engelbrecht is charged with one count of sexual abuse of a minor and one count of lewd and lascivious conduct.

Judge Debra Heise sustained Engelbrecht's $100,000 bail on Wednesday and appointed a public defender to represent him, court records indicate. Heise also imposed an order barring Engelbrecht from contacting the alleged victim in the case.

Engelbrecht, 50, fondled a 4-year-old girl in 2008 and propositioned her to perform a sex act, charging papers allege. The alleged misconduct occurred while Engelbrecht was living in the city of Priest River.

The allegations against Engelbrecht surfaced in June and a $100,000 warrant was issued for his arrest.

Engelbrecht turned up in a domestic dispute in Tampa, Fla., on June 21, but it was before the Idaho warrant was issued, so authorities there had no reason to detain him. His next contact police came on June 30, when he came to the attention of police in the metropolitan Detroit suburb of Northville Township and was arrested on the Idaho warrant.

A hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence against Engelbrecht to justify a trial in 1st District Court is set for Aug. 25.
