Yanik claims win in Scenic Half Marathon
SANDPOINT — A host of local distance runners fared well in the Scenic Half on Sunday, led by overall winner Jamie Yanik, of Sandpoint, who finished the 13 mile race in a lickety split time of 1:13.27, nearly five minutes ahead of the next closest runner.
More than 800 runners from around the Northwest took part in the race, run amid a steady downpour.
Sandpoint’s Steven Tyson finished third, former SHS student Brian Hadley finished fourth, Sandpoint’s Jon Harding fifth, Clark Fork’s Samuel Overman seventh and Sandpoint’s Jacob Cartwright tenth to round out the top finishers on the the men’s side.
Top local finishers on the women’s side included Sandpoint runners Jody Aslett (3rd), Suzanne Kaplan (5th) and Jennifer Merwin (6th).
Sandpoint’s David Yarnell finished 14th in the 10K race to post the top local finish on men’s side, while Priest River’s Donna Neale was fifth and Sandpoint Christine Janisse was seventh in the women’s 10K race.
Race organizers hope the event continues to grow, with a goal of 1,200 racers next year.
