Verna L. Carter, 84, passed away, in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, in Pinecrest Memorial Park. Pastor Jon Pomeroy, Sandpoint Church of God, will officiate.
Verna was born on Dec. 19, 1925, in Careywood, Idaho, the daughter of Charles and Jenny Victoria Heller. She attended school in Kootenai and Bonner counties. She received numerous awards for spelling and writing in school. She enjoyed reading historical romance novels.
Verna worked at the Panida Newsstand, Sandpoint Café, J.C. Pennys, and for Margaret and Joe Bradetich at M and J Grocery, for Les Rogers at Rogers Grocery on Lake Street, Fifth Avenue and Excell Foods.
Verna retired in 1989 to help care for her grandchildren.
Verna married Ira Frank (Pete) Carter on June 19, 1948. They had four children, Susan (Frank) Schilling of Kootenai, Idaho, Donald (Tina) Carter of Cocolalla, Idaho, Virginia Carter of Spokane Valley, Wash., and Barbara Gors of Kootenai. She also has eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Jenny Heller; an infant brother, George Heller,; a sister, Lila Mapes; and her husband, Pete Carter.
