America in dire need of debt consolidation

| April 12, 2011 7:00 AM

U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan (chairman, Committee on Budget) has presented a plan to extricate America from its financial quagmire. Bully for him! I salute the Committee on Budget’s efforts.

Actually, I find it completely out of character for politicians to do anything that would impair their reelection prospects. So, it follows that the Congressman feels his committee’s plan will help him retain his cushy job. We don’t know yet what is in the details of the plan or what assumptions it makes.

But, coming from a Republican, beware, at its core, it is more than likely heavily pro-rich and harshly anti-poor, with a lot of nuggets thrown in to assure support by the RINO crowd: gun nuts, gay bashers, Jesus freaks, racists, assorted Tea Party ignoramuses. But, I don’t put the congressman down for that. Being heavily pro-rich and harshly anti-poor and appealing to RINOs is to be a bona fide Republican.

America is in dire need of a debt consolidation plan — one that does not kick the poor in the gonads. If Congressman Ryan’s plan fulfills these requirement, we should all lift him on our shoulders and support it. If not, our only hope is for the Democrats to find the spine to join the debate and force the required changes to make the Republican plan both effective and humane. Otherwise, you can wave goodbye to what is left of the middle class.
