Kindest move would be animals' euthanization

| April 14, 2011 7:00 AM

The other day, I heard in passing a proposal being considered by the local animal shelter. I’ll admit to not having completely got all the details, but the broad strokes of the idea is to implement a program of trapping, spaying, and then releasing feral cats in the Bonner County area.

Assuming, that this wasn’t a clever attempt at an April Fools news report, this has to be the stupidest idea that I’ve heard in years. Going to all this effort, to only then release these poor animals back to lives of dumpsters, trash cans, and the occasional bowl of milk is the epitome of a “feel-good” and “do-something” approach to a problem that shows no regard for the unintended consequences that will result.

Inevitably, kind-hearted people will leave out food for the cute felines that are too wild to domesticate. The end result is to also be feeding the hungry skunks, raccoons, and squirrels in the area and allow them to better reproduce as well.

I happen to like cats, and have responsibly owned three cats over the years. As cruel as it sounds to dump these spayed animals in the deep forest, releasing them back into town is no more kind and caring of an approach.

It’s time to grow up, people. Trap these unfortunate cats and humanely euthanize them. Then use your resources to offer extended spay/neuter programs to owners who are trying to limit the felines that they already have.
