Levy proposal is a necessity, not luxury

| February 10, 2011 6:00 AM

I am a parent and a homeowner with four children in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. I want to express my support for the upcoming levy. I find it troubling that we need to vote on a levy every two years simply to keep our schools functioning. In other states this levy would automatically be renewed and be a normal part of our property taxes. In a perfect world, the federal and state governments would budget for the cost of the education our country guarantees our children. This world is not perfect.

I urge you to vote for the supplemental/instructional levy on March 8. The levy money will fund one-third of the district staffing and currently the schools already running with minimal staffing. Per household the increase in cost is small — $3.44 per month on a house valued at $250,000. It is a little price to pay for the education of our children, for the future leaders of Sandpoint. This levy is not a luxury it is a necessity.

Our schools need you. We have teachers and staff who continually find ways to provide a quality education to our children without regard to ongoing budget cuts. They are dedicated to our children and excellent education.

Our children and our schools need your support on March 8.
