SANDPOINT — Fulfilling a goal she’s had since childhood, Sandpoint senior Jacque Cantrell signed a letter of intent to play college soccer next season at Spokane Falls Community College.

Cantrell received a three-quarter scholarship offer to play for the Bigfoot, a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. The team went 12-6-3 last season, and Cantrell picked the school over Walla Walla after scrimmaging with the team on a visit.

“I liked the energy of the girls, I felt like that was where I wanted to be,” said Cantrell, who the coaches have said will play both defender and midfield. “I’m looking forward to the high level of the game, the intensity.”

Cantrell played much of her senior season at Sandpoint with an injured knee, but was a huge factor when healthy and a key component of the Bulldogs’ run at the state title. Sandpoint coach Julie Pitre, who played soccer in college at LSU, believes Cantrell has the makeup to hold her own at the next level.

“I think she’ll be very successful,” said Pitre. “She already plays with the tenacity of players at the college level. She’s physical enough and vocal enough.”
