True embarrassment found in sports' cost
In response to Mike Conner’s letter to the editor dated Feb. 10, “Singer’s performance embarrassed country”
Beyond embarrassing?
While perhaps it is embarrassing that the singer botched the lyrics, I feel the real embarrassment for our country is that hundreds of millions of dollars were spent and will continue to be spent on major league sports and national events such as the Super Bowl.
It has moved beyond embarrassing to appalling — millions of Americans are out of work and uninsured, our school systems are neglected, and our elders are not adequately being cared for (the list is endless); however, as a society, we continue to place emphasis and undue importance on who’s performing at half-time, who has the coolest beer commercial, and how big were the winners’ rings. It is sickening. And yes, the world is watching, and they surely see where our priorities reside.
