Current system no longer makes sense

| January 9, 2011 6:00 AM

In this age of computers, the Internet, websites, etc. where the results of any election can be obtained as fast as the media provides to us, why is there a two- or three-party system still in place?

If someone wants to run for any elected office then they can do so as long as they are citizens of the United States of America. Then the one with the most votes, by the people, is declared the winner. Isn’t that a novel idea? Depending on the office that is going to be filled, all campaigners can only spend a set amount of money on their campaign.

Why do Democrats, Republicans, and independents spend millions of dollars on their campaigns and then the individuals and corporations who donate the money for these campaigns are allowed to write everything they donated off of their taxes? Then we have those ridiculous conventions. Do we really need delegates an the electoral collage? Didn’t that go out with outdoor plumbing, high button shoes, and buggy whips?
