Host of free sailor workshops on tap in 2011

SANDPOINT — Once again, Sandpoint Parks and Recreation and the Sandpoint Sailing Association combine to offer free sailing workshops, starting on Saturday, Jan. 15.

These free workshops will be held on Saturdays at the Sandpoint Community Hall, located at 204 First Ave., and are open to the public. Adults and youth at least 10 years-old are encouraged to attend.

  • Sail trim and tactics — Jack Christensen, a North Sails representative from Seattle, will share his insights into practical sail function and trim to improve your sailing ability and confidence. This workshop is for both beginner and experienced sailors. This first workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Racing rules of sailing (2009-12) — Review the current racing rules of sailing using animated computer diagrams, group discussions and the rules themselves. This workshop is for intermediate sailors and will be held on Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sailboat cruising — Share in this introduction to the laid-back side of sailing. Learn about marinas, anchorages, mooring buoys and comfortable living on the lake. This workshop will be held on March 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sailing safety, CPR, first aid and heavy weather tactics (and other valuable information to save your butt) — The title says it all. This new workshop should be required for every sailor, and will be held on April 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • New sailor workshop — This workshop covers basic sailing skills, terms and knowledge. You’ll learn the how-to stuff you need and the where and when stuff that makes it fun. This beginning workshop will take place on May 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
