Lakeland downs Sandpoint in 4A North clash

| January 22, 2011 6:00 AM

RATHDRUM — Freshman Hailey Olin scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Maggie Kirscher added six points, seven rebounds and three steals, but it wasn’t enough as a pivotal fourth quarter proved the difference in Sandpoint’s 39-33 loss to Lakeland in 4A North girls basketball Friday night at Lakeland High School.

The Bulldogs (7-11, 0-4 4A IEL) trailed by just two points to start the fourth quarter, but couldn’t convert on some good opportunities. The Bulldogs have been competitive in all four of the 4A North games, but haven’t been able to break through for a win.

“It was a good team effort defensively,” said Bulldogs assistant coach Melvin Speelmon. “At the end we turned the ball over, and they hit some free throws and finished the game out.”

Neena Buchmann scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Hawks (10-9, 3-1 4A IEL). Moscow (3-1 4A IEL) will host the district tournament by virtue of tie-breaker, having played more 5A teams.

Sandpoint is at Timberlake on Thursday.
