Will levy improve students' education?

| January 30, 2011 6:00 AM

I always thought that our education system was producing well-educated children who would ensure our future leadership in the world. The call for a yes vote on the upcoming school levy led me to look into this.

I was surprised because all the information I could find on this subject, on the Internet, leads one to believe that the U.S. education system is turning out only mediocre students.

Testing of 15 year olds from 33 countries in reading, math and science in 2006 produced the following results:

In reading, the U.S. was ranked number 33, Canada was ranked third. In math, the U.S. was ranked 27th, Canada was ranked fifth. In science, the U.S. was ranked 22nd, Canada was ranked second.

There were several such articles on the Internet where students from developed countries were compared. What clearly fit the results was the headline, “Poor Marks For U.S. Education System.”

What are the leaders of our education system doing to make our system comparable to Canada’s? Are they studying the system of our neighbor country so as to improve the performance of our students, or is the caliber of student we are producing good enough?

What will the school levy do to improve the education of our students in the competitive world we live in?
