Low-speed chase ends with arrest
SANDPOINT — Police had to use two sets of tire-deflating spike strips to halt a Ponderay woman who was allegedly driving under the influence with her 5-month-old child in the vehicle on Saturday night.
Tiffany Lee Callahan is charged with a second-offense DUI, eluding a law officer, resisting arrest and child endangerment. Judge Debra Heise declined to release Callahan on her own recognizance on Monday and set her bail at $1,900, court records show.
Callahan, 27, allegedly cut off a Bonner County sheriff’s deputy on U.S. Highway 95 in Sagle. Callahan proceeded to swerve over the fog and center lines, prompting the deputy to activate his overhead lights in attempt to pull her over, the arrest report said.
Callahan allegedly failed to yield, touching off a low-speed pursuit across the Long Bridge. Spike strips were set by Sandpoint Police when Callahan’s pickup entered town, but Callahan continued to drive several blocks on bare rims.
Callahan is further accused of disregarding commands to exit the vehicle and had to be forcibly removed. She allegedly scuffled with officers when they took her into custody.
Callahan told Heise on Monday that she did not see the pursuing deputy until she was on the Long Bridge, which has narrow shoulders.
