Palmer hoping to run hurdles for Idaho team in Australia
CLARK FORK — Clark Fork High School student body president and three-sport standout Zara Palmer has a rare opportunity to participate on a track and field team in Australia this summer, but before she can clear any hurdles on the track, she must first clear the hurdle of raising the necessary money to make it happen.
Palmer was invited by Down Under Sports, an organization that enables high school seniors to make a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in select sports in Australia, but will need to raise more than $3,500 to make the trip possible.
Palmer, the daughter of Michael and Julie Palmer, has sent out more than 90 sponsorship letters to businesses in Sandpoint, Hope, Clark Fork and Noxon. She also has fundraising plans that include a bake sale, dinner car washes and possibly a bowl-a-thon.
Palmer has qualified for the state tournament in hurdles her sophomore and junior years, and as a senior has helped the volleyball team and basketball team to state, and it eyeing a medal in the hurdles as a senior.
“I was excited when I receive the letter in the mail that I was asked to be a part of the Idaho team to compete in Australia,” said Palmer, noting Clark Fork’s Adam Denham also ran in the tournament and raved about the experience. “I am a hard worker and promise to make my community, coaches, friends and family proud.”
