McClure's leadership, dignity were inspiring

| March 8, 2011 6:00 AM

Many years and what seems like another lifetime ago, I came to North Idaho to accept a position working in social services. Located in Coeur d’Alene, our agency had offices in all five northern counties providing a variety of services for eligible individuals.

On many occasions I wrote to, or met with Sen. Jim McClure asking for his support for programs I thought at the time, “would change the world.” Sometimes the support came, sometimes it didn’t. I did, however, always receive a call from Ruthie Johnson — his longtime North Idaho aide — or a personal letter explaining the reasoning behind his decision. He often called me personally.

At the time, I was a not too long out of college, almost liberal. Sen. McClure really started me on a path to “see the other side,” the taxpayers’ side. Jim McClure knew I had been raised a Truman Democrat and respected my often “not too valid positions.” In today’s political climate, he would shudder.

Truly a gentleman, an honest thinker, and above all, ‘his own man.’ His kind voice, leadership and Statesmanship could be an example to the politicians of today! Thank you, Sen. McClure for your help, and giving me friendship, regardless of party. We need more Jim McClures. Rest in peace and dignity.
