Lessons to be learned from poaching incident

| March 17, 2011 7:00 AM

I know Jeff Jayne has his detractors. The moose incident was unfortunate. Let’s see, the guy had bought a legitimate hunting tag, messed up on the dates and committed a crime because he shot the animal before the hunting window opened. Was a crime committed? Yes. Was it a tragic error? No doubt. But a guy (who happens to be a law enforcement officer) immediately fesses up and says he messed up.

It is unusually rare for someone who has much to lose because of his profession to admit his culpability. A lesser person would have tried to cover the incident up and not report it promptly. Just maybe we should use this as an opportunity as a learning experience for our kids. That here was someone who messed up big time by his own admission but admitted his guilt and faced the consequences.
